Getting overlooked for a promotion can be disheartening and even humiliating.
Most people – and especially women, regardless of their professional standing, don’t speak to the personal value they bring to the job. This inability directly impacts your career advancement.
The main reason you’re being passed for a promotion – despite your hard work – it’s because your work doesn’t speak for itself, YOU DO!
You shouldn’t expect that promotion if you don’t position yourself for it. So what you can – and need to – do, is to leverage your hard work to position yourself for that next career move.
What is “POSITIONING” about?
Positioning yourself is about providing relevant and consistent information – to the right people – to help them understand “who you are”, “what you do” and most importantly “how you can help them become better at what they do”.
There are a couple of strategies you can use to position yourself:
- Building your Personal Branding
- Promoting your Achievements
- Networking
- Leveraging Linkedin
But today, I’m not going to dive into these strategies simply because you need a strong base before you get started. So for the purpose of this article, I’m going to share the 4 steps (from the book ICONIC by Scott McKain) you need to implement first.
1.BE CLEAR:
Make it simple for others to understand who you are, what you’re going at and how you can help them.
Tips: you need a high concept statement ready, a sentence that requires 6 seconds or less to clearly convey your message (the impact/transformation you make).

2.BE CREATIVE:
If you communicate (or not) like everyone else (which basically most people do) no one is going to notice you or remember you.
Tips: Look at every point of content you have with your customers/managers/partners and identify one point where you can “flip the script” and deliver creatively.
3. SHARE YOUR STORY:
Create a compelling narrative. “The story you keep to yourself has the same value in the market than not having a story at all” (ICONIC, p39). You story matters, own it, be proud of it and share it.
4. FOCUS ON THE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE:
Your goal should be the create the ultimate experience for every customer/partners you work with – every time.
